21 Winter Survival tips

1. Dress like an onion
Wear different layers so you can get out and enjoy winter and take some layers off inside buildings

2. Take a sauna
Thanks to the Finns for inventing this great whole-body heater!

3. Keep moving
Try ice skating, sledding, skiing or snowboarding – you will stay warm and it’s a lot of fun

4. Make a snowman
…or a snow angel together with your kids and they won’t grumble anymore

5. Time
Give yourself extra time to get to places because most things are just slower in the winter. You can fight it or you can start earlier

6. Water resistant shoes or boots
Nobody likes wet feet

7. Chili Peppers
The capsaicin found in chili peppers boosts energy, enhances circulation and will pick you up from your mid afternoon slump

8. Get plenty of Zzzzz
Studies show that sleep deprivation can make you more susceptible to illness by reducing the number of cells in your body dedicated to fighting things like microbes. The average adult needs about 6-8 hours of sleep

9. Get outsideGo outdoors in natural daylight as much as possible, especially at midday and on bright days to prevent a winter depression

10. Hot chocolate
After doing outdoor activities reward yourself with a hot chocolate

11. Housework
If the weather prevents you getting outside, stay active indoors - catch up on all the household tasks you've been putting off

12. See your friends and family
It’s been shown that socialising is good for your mental health and helps ward off the winter blues


13. Get your slippers on
We lose most of our body heat through our head, fingers and toes, so make sure these are covered up first.

14. Hot water bottles
A hot water bottle is comforting in so many ways - you can carry one around with you, heat your bed up with it, or even warm your clothes up before you slip into them on a cold morning.

15. Hot pots
Eat healthy hot dinners such as stews laden with vegetables. As well as keeping you toasty, the nutrients will keep you healthy when the weather is trying to weaken your immune system.

16. Shopping
If you haven’t done yet: Buy comfortable winter boots and a warm coat

17. Phone
Talk - especially if you've been stuck in the house for a few days. Lift the phone and call friends and family for a blether.

18. Have a massage
Make a booking today. Regular massage can decrease blood pressure, improve circulation, generate feel good endorphins and benefit your immune system

19. B Better
Eat more wholegrain bread, chicken and fish to increase your intake of B vitamins and boost your energy and metabolism

20. Have faith
In mid-March the first tiny flowers will bloom, welcoming spring

21. Have a holiday
Finally you can ignore all these tips and escape the winter with a flight ticket to the South Pacific
